Immunizations: Flu Shots
NATIONWIDE CORPORATE FLU PROGRAMS

Studies show that flu shots are proven to reduce absentee rates among employees. In fact, non-immunized workers have a rate of absenteeism that is 36% higher than immunized workers.

The average loss in productivity for an employee infected with the flu is $575-$1000/week. Add to that the additional losses in salary and benefits for a sick employee, and the flu shot becomes a valuable tool for enhancing your company's bottom line. (Source: New England Journal of Medicine, October 1995,2000, CDC and various Human Resources executives)

Why Should We Provide Flu Shots to Our Employees?
  • 114,000 people are hospitalized every year in the U.S. due to complications of the flu

  • 36,000 people die each year in the U.S. due to complications of the flu

  • vaccination results in 32-45% decrease in absenteeism

  • average sick day costs $200 in lost productivity per employee

  • vaccination is the most effective way to prevent flu and the spread of infection

Who Should Receive the Flu Shot?
  • anyone over 50

  • anyone with a chronic medical condition (heart disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes etc.)

  • individuals with weakened immune systems (due to infection, steroids, cancer treatment, etc.)

  • women in their 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy

  • those who come in frequent contact with high risk individuals

Is an Annual Flu Shot Needed?

A new vaccine is developed each year, specific to the three virus strands identified by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as most prevalent. These strands will account for 70-90% of influenza that year. Since the strands of virus change yearly, you must be vaccinated every year.

I'm Worried About Side Effects.

Vaccine is created from an inactive form of the virus; YOU CANNOT GET THE FLU FROM A FLU SHOT!!! Common side effects include: soreness, swelling and redness at the injection site, low-grade fever, and aches. Severe reactions are extremely rare. Flu shots are one of the safest, most effective vaccines. INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE ALLERGIC TO EGGS MAY NOT RECEIVE A FLU SHOT!
