Cholesterol tests find out how much good fat and bad fat are floating around in your blood. Like blood pressure, having your cholesterol checked regularly is an important way to find out how healthy your employees are keeping the inside of their bodies. Keeping cholesterol within a healthy range will help protect against health threats such as hypertension, heart attacks and stroke. Cholesterol is measured by taking a small amount of blood from you finger and is often done in combination with a glucose test. The results are quick and participants receive the result in about five minutes. The tests available are: Total Cholesterol; Total Cholesterol and HDL (good cholesterol); and Total Cholesterol, HDL and Glucose. All of these tests also include the Cardiac Risk Ratio. Total Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a fatty substance produced by our bodies that is an essential part of every cell. Cholesterol is also found in foods of animal origin such as eggs, milk, meat, fish and poultry. Too much dietary cholesterol is unnecessary and can lead to heart disease. High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol helps protect the heart and is considered the "good" cholesterol. Cardiac Risk Ratio: This is the ratio of HDL cholesterol to total cholesterol. This ratio indicates if cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. If your dietary cholesterol level is borderline high, and if you have at least two other risk factors for heart disease, you should follow the advice of your physician for high cholesterol.
