Introduction
Disability cases typically involve multiple departments, off-site medical and rehab providers, and insurance and claims administrators. Being on-site allows the disability manager to work directly with the client's benefits, human resource, and compensation staff, and even with line supervisors - all of whom may play a role in resolving the case and returning the disabled employee to work. A team approach is most effective, allowing the disability managers to involve other members as needed, and always to keeping supervisors, managers and other appropriate personnel informed of case progress. Disability managers must also resolve each case in the context of the client's disability policies; being on-site helps ensure the disability managers work in synch with all applicable client programs.
On-site disability managers are also able to ensure that off-site medical providers have accurate and relevant information about the work environment that employees are being returned to. This first hand familiarity lends credibility and practicality to the process.
